The painting "Bold Flowers" comes from the artist's mature period, in which he made extensive use of organic abstraction. The 1960s are today considered the most important stage of his painting, and the paintings created at that time enrich museum and private collections. This type of work is of interest to collectors of classic post-war avant-garde as well as abstract art.
The offered, highly decorative composition, is characterized by a strong contrast of black, red and light backgrounds and biomorphic, almost surreal forms. The painterly structure, with its clear expression of color and dynamics of guided lines, refers to plant motifs, typical of this type of abstraction. Since the mid-1950s, Alfred Lenica created unique organic compositions, built with multi-layers of paint, leaks and expressive gestural painting.
In 1963, Lenica held a solo exhibition at the Arsenal City Gallery in Poznań, presenting his most recent abstract realizations. In this decade, Lenica developed his own technique based on the application and partial removal of successive layers of paint, achieving the effect of interpenetrating structures and organic transformations of forms. His paintings from this time evoke associations with the world of nature subjected to a process of constant transformation.
A DESA "Works of Modern Art" export sticker, intended for the foreign market, has been preserved on the reverse of the painting, confirming the painting's functioning in the official art trade circulation of the communist Poland. Such markings are found on works by Polish avant-garde artists exported to galleries and foreign collectors in the 1960s and 1970s.
